THE STABLES AT THE ANGEL INN

  • Date: 2022/23
  • Client: Suffolk Country Inns
  • Project Type: Construction Management

This project was to change the use of a grade 2 listed domestic building next door to five luxury un-suit bedrooms in Stoke by Nayland Colchester. My role as Construction Manager was obtaining planning and procuring trades and managing schedules and budgets.

About this Project

The Angel Inn has been a popular destination for centuries located in the heart of Dedham Vale (AONB) and was even a popular haunt for John Constable. As part of the inn’s extensive renovations, the owners acquired a neighbouring residential property for conversion to commercial accommodation. The brief was to provide high-quality, luxurious rooms to accommodate the increase in destination diners and continue the exceptional service of the fine dining restaurant. The Stables, formally an outbuilding, was converted into a house in the 1970s but had fallen into disrepair. The C17 timber-framed and plaster house is Grade II listed and occupies a prominent position on the high street of the village.

The house is located across a beautiful courtyard designed by Thomas Hoblyn, a gold winner at Chelsea Flower Show. The conversion has provided an additional 5 rooms with ensuites. The rooms have impressive attention to detail throughout, blending the charm of timber lancet windows and beams with modern conveniences like the MVHR system and underfloor heating in the well-equipped ensuites and high-tech smart glass walls which obscure the facilities for privacy.

The owners were keen to adopt a sensitive approach to the renovation, preserving the historical importance of the building but also ensuring that any modern adaptions were accessible and environmentally conscious. They have used high-quality natural materials throughout and employed local trades and craftspeople which provided agility to the project throughout the pandemic.

The conversion will allow many visitors to enjoy the building for years to come. Guests feel part of history staying here and the high quality has been recognised by The Sunday Times, 100 Best Places to Stay in Britain, awarding The Stables as Hotel of The Year. The owners are very proud custodians of the building, which has resulted in an exceptional finish.
